MOR THAN- painter

Mór Than was a Hungarian painter (1828 Óbecse/Bečej – 1899). He was educated in Italy and Vienna beside his cooperation with similar famous painters in his homeland. He worked in a realistic – pre-impressionist style. His subjects were mostly historic events and portraits but also mythological or fantasy themes. His painted frescos decorate several prominent public buildings in Budapest.

Mór Than also designed the first-to-be Hungarian postage stamp in 1848.[1] This design is shown on the right. However, the stamp has never actually been published since Hungary lost her independence in 1849 and became a province of the Austrian Empire.
