This 900-year-old town defies time, regimes and history with its rhythm and habits, always remaining spontaneous, ready for a change of decision and consent only when itself sees fit. A peaceful town of quiet familiar neighbourhood, long wide streets, where silent Panonian view and its quiet dwellers rest in the conspiratory silence rich in shadows, a town for unexpected guests to fall in love at first sight because, as they say, it has charm and innate familiarity. Situated at the soil, water and sun of Bačka, it has been warming its old roofs and parks for centuries, as if it has been waiting, down-to-earth and pensive in the sleepy twilight of qiuietness and silence, for some more important and constant attention, some ultimate incentive. This two-nationality town (27,000) of noble and cloaked manners, is the seat of the municipality (41,000) which includes Bačko Petrovo Selo (8,000), Bačko Gradište (5,000), Radičević (2,500) and Mileševo (1,500), bilingual densely populated settlements where mainly agricultural households turned to its existence of calm lasting live and work. Today, as in its past, Bečej and its surroundings represent a multi-ethnic environment of mutual admiration, respect and tolerance where human rights, traditions and differencies are respected regardless of religious, national and any other affiliations.
